Changing the world through Ethical Fashion:
Passion Lilie is a women’s fair trade clothing line that began with a desire to provide ethical fashion clothing that is affordable and accessible to everyone.
Katie Schmidt, a global traveler, philanthropist and experienced designer, founded Passion Lilie in January of 2013. Katie had been working for several years as the Executive Director for a fair trade organization. She loved her work but felt frustrated that there was not more ethical fashion that was affordable, stylish and accessible. After visiting India in 2012 and seeing first hand the many benefits of fair trade, Katie decided to create an on-trend yet affordable women’s fair trade
Katie’s vision was to create a fun, playful line of dresses with simple cuts that are easy to wear and flattering on many different body types. She is inspired by the colorful and bold Indian hand
block fabrics iconic to the line, as well as by 1920s-1970s fashion.
Passion Lilie is a member with the Fair Trade Federation and the Ethical Fashion Forum as well as a Certified Green Business with Green America.
“My mission in life is to improve the world I live in, and because of my love for design, I have chosen to do this through fashion.” –Katie Schmidt!
The Passion Lilie mission is to empower artisans by creating dignified employment opportunities offering fair wages and safe and healthy working conditions to individuals, mainly women, in developing communities. They believe that these positive job opportunities lead to sustainable societies and a better world. The Passion Lilie achieves this mission by partnering with fair trade certified manufacturing units for both the fabric and tailoring, which adhere to a high level of social and environmental sustainability.
Passion Lilie fabrics are all hand block printed. Hand block printing is an ancient Indian traditional art form that utilizes a hand carved teak wood block that is dipped in dye and stamped by hand onto cotton or silk.
All of the dyes that are used in the hand block printing are natural and based from things such as flowers, fruits, seeds, nuts and leaves. These items are mixed to create varying shades of colors. Passion Lilie manufacturers use almost no electricity and no harmful chemicals to make the fabric. The fabrics are usually washed in the river in order to decrease wastage of water, and since the dyes are natural, they do not pollute the local waterways.
Passion Lilie is committed to green practices locally in New Orleans, which involves reducing their paper/ packaging consumption and using as many recycled materials as possible when print marketing or packaging is needed.
Passion Lilie is committed to:
• Supporting fair wages, and safe and healthy working condition
• Creating stylish and affordable women’s clothing
• Preserving artistic cultural talents of artisans
• Providing new opportunities for community development
