The EssentialsSarafina was launched in 2011 by Bita Diomande, an American-Ivorian living in the US. Bita grew up in Cote d’Ivoire, Pakistan, and India before moving to the US for college. Inspired by the beautiful crafts she saw growing up, Bita decided to start a business that would showcase products from developing countries while empowering the individuals making them. Sarafina collections are fusion inspired, meshing Western concepts with ethnic styles. Sarafina works with designers from around the world who make a real impact in their communities. The Sarafina website currently includes collections by Sarafina and Komal’s Enneagram Flows, an India based brand. Sarafina is all about fashion, social justice, and empowerment. Ethic-ChicThe Sarafina necklace collection is the in-house jewelry line. The Sarafina mission is to showcase beautiful crafts and fashion from developing countries while paying fairly for the goods they purchase. In keeping with their socially conscious model, they purchase their materials from small scale suppliers in India and pay over the market rate for them. A number of their suppliers have full time jobs and sell supplies to have an additional source of income. In addition to being ethically produced, the beads Sarafina uses are recycled from previously assembled necklaces. After purchasing the necklaces, they take them apart, and reuse the beads to make necklaces designed by Sarafina. Find & Flaunt!
