EFW’s own Kim Poldner seems to be in tune with the times in her two recent blogs about Ecofeminism and Female Entrepreneurship. This past month has seen awards and accolades bestowed upon two green entrepreneurs, who also happen to be the owners of great eco fashion boutiques! The April issue of Chicago magazine, which hit the stands on March 19th, announced the recipients of its third annual Green Awards, honoring Chicagoans who are pioneering smart, new environmental ideas. And who topped the list of winners? None other than Jessa Brinkmeyer of Pivot! In the fall of 2007, at 24, Jessa Brinkmeyer opened Pivot, Chicago’s first eco-fashion boutique, in the West Loop. Brinkmeyer has become a major voice in the eco-fashion movement by becoming her cause’s own detective: She visits designers’ production facilities, studies fabrics and researches details such as dyes. Also an avid supporter of local talent, Brinkmeyer organized a guerrilla project in the fall of 2008, the Museum of Sustainable Style (MOSS), that showcased the talent and breadth of local sustainable fashion and furniture designers during the city’s fashion week. In London Fashion Week’s Estethica guide for AW09, Matilda Lee of the Ecologist , picked the top eleven most inspirational women in ethical and sustainable fashion today and her list includes Sindhu Venkatanarayanan, founder of DeviDoll.com. DeviDoll, which we featured in our recent Office Magazine Issue is an online boutique which sells chic, up-to-the minute fashion. Along with Lucy Siegle, India Knight, Livia Firth and Dilys Williams, Sindhu was selected for her upfront image as activist cum retailer in the world of ethical fashion. Sindhu has been part of Estethica’s vetting panel and also writes a regular blog (‘Curate Your Consumption’ ) about the intersection between sustainablility, style and fashion. DeviDoll, is currently enjoying great success with its Spring Fling sale, partnering with sustainable fashion designer From Somewhere with huge discounts on international ethical fashion labels such as Mociun, Kelly B, Deborah Lindquist and Fin, many of whom are exclusive to DeviDoll.com. Says Sindhu of the Spring Fling, “This is the very first time that DeviDoll has been involved in a venture such as this. We are showing our commitment to keeping the flag of ethical fashion flying high despite peoples’ possible current financial constraints, and I most certainly don't want cheap, fast fashion to seem attractive again.”
