What would fashion be without photography? From Newton to Demarchelier or Mario Tesino, fashion has always been a fertile ground for the most innovative photography. What if you could mix your love of fashion, photography and the environment to bring awareness to the importance of preserving our rainforests? This year’s Sony World Photography Awards might be just your chance! This competition accepts entries from all over the world for both amateur and professional categories. This year, in keeping with the central theme of “Focus Earth”, one of the Sony World Photography awards is the “Prince’s Rainforest Project Award”. This award is concentrated on highlighting the work that the Prince’s Rainforest Project carries out and asks applicants to think about how important the rainforest is as an asset, which should be preserved. Although the SWPA also have a separate Fashion Photography category, this could be a great occasion for an innovative young photographer to show that style can go hand in hand with environmental preservation. For inspiration, take a look at Oslken’s fabulous “Amazon Guardians” collection from 2007. This Brazilian designer found inspiration and unique sustainable fibers in his local rainforest to create a sharp and contemporary collection. Another green material that is helping preserve the traditional lifestyle of indigenous people in the Amazon is treetap rubber, also called “vegetable leather”, which can be used the same way as animal leather. Examples can be found in bags from Amazon Life or Bags of Change. Fashion photography has the power to create aspirations, desires and dreams, so let’s use this power to showcase the modern beauty of eco fashion! Comments (1)

Of all the qualities, imagination heads the list. In spite of the comparative simplicity that marks many fashion photographs today every picture is the product of some photographers imagination. You will need to approach each photo with a fresh slant. The background must be harmonious with the merchandise. It must accent it without distracting the eye from the outfit that is featured in the photograph.
