ETHIC-2008_2.jpg No wonder the UK is one of the leaders in terms of ethical fashion, the budding designers get an early start on sustainability with several competitions to showcase their talents.

Yesterday the winners of the UKSkills’ Fashion Design – Ethic 2008 award, strutted their stuff in London’s respectable Fashion and Textile Museum , in an event hosted by Beyond Green director Joanna Yarrow.

This competition was open to students in further education courses in the UK and sponsored by the Eco Design Network and Brother. The challenge was to create an outfit that was trendy and stylish while also addressing at least one key issues, be it fair-trade, organic materials, recycling, animal-friendly fabrics ETHIC-2008_3.jpgor innovative environmentally-friendly new materials.

The winners was Urbanites team Nicole Da Silva and Phong Nguyen who crafted a new wedding dress from an old one found in a charity shop. For a more day-to-day look, we liked the interpretation of the little black dress provided by Sew It Seams’ Eleanor Layton, Lauren Donachie and Sarah Punch. As for that touch of outright British eccentricity we have to give kudos to Rags to Riches’ Sarah Poffa and Aba Mensah. Now that the lab experiments are over, let’s watch these young talents grow and see who’s going to end up in our closets in a few years!ETHIC-2008_1.jpg
