Emotional ceremonies, dancing till dawn, boozy speeches and too much cake…the summer wedding season is drawing to an end. You have a few more bridesmaid dresses in your closet and of course “you can always shorten them and wear them again” as Katherine Heigl said in the movie 27 dresses or you can learn from your mistakes and become a more eco savvy bride or bridesmaid next year… First up, for the aspiring wedding designers amongst you, here’s a golden opportunity to show your catwalk creativity: For the first time this year, the University by the Sea, in Long Beach is organizing an Eco-Weddings Fashion Contest. The call for entries is open until September 5th 2008 and he challenge is to create a wedding dress or tuxedo from recycled, reclaimed or sustainable fabrics. To register go to www.universitybythesea.com. To get inspired, check out the winner of this year’s UKSkills Fashion Design awards; the Urbanites team had won with a wedding dress made from an old one found in a charity shop. If your thoughts are occupied with the planning of the big event, green wedding planners and resources are now available worldwide. Just last month we reported on British ethical wedding expert Katie Fewings of Ethical Weddings showing some gorgeous organic gowns from Motasem and Wholly Jo's at an ethical fashion event. UK eco site Style Will Save Us also featured an excellent article on sustainable weddings introducing us to such essentials as The Dressmaker, where you can buy and sell pre-loved wedding dresses or Gaia House which makes bespoke creations in organic fabrics. Stateside, Emily Anderson is the go-to wedding lady with her successful book Eco Chic Weddings your destination wedding happens to take you.

I am a supporter of eco and environment freindly thinking and so I am glad to hear that people start to introduce this to the wedding industry. As long as the dress still has style, why not!
All the best from Thailand!
