FAIR-TRADE-IN-THE-FRAME.jpgFollowing the success of Veja’s Novo Mundo(s) exhibition by photographer Florent Demarchez, photographic exhibitions are proving that a picture tells a thousand words, as more companies frame their sourcing journeys. A joint collaboration between fairtrade and organic cotton companies Liv, who provide a fantastic home wares and fashion line, and Piccalilly, favored for their colorful, polka dotted kid’s range, showcases travel photographer Mark Ingram. On a whistle-stop tour around rural India Ingram different aspects of the growing, ginning and looming of the cotton, Ingram has captured. Launched at an exclusive event at Notting Hill’s trendy bijoux Indian restaurant Malabar, with the Fairtrade Foundation’s Harriet Lamb in attendance, the exhibition is due to visit many of Liv and Piccalilly’s stockists across the UK, including Skipton and the Aberystwyth Arts Centre.

Unlike the usual display of happy farmer images, these inspiring shots go even deeper, showcasing everybody from the chef who provides the meals for workers at the ginning factory to the dyers and even the managers. As Dawn Foxall of Liv remarks, ‘The world of Organic (and) Fairtrade cotton is very new and so there are not many people working in this area. The chain is unique in its foresight and compassion to create sustainable business for the whole chain from the farmers to the end user – Hannah (of Piccalilly) and I felt we should tell the world about it! Our brands stories are unique but behind them is an even more worthwhile and unique chain of people who are as important as the end customer!’

A particularly wonderful shot includes the brainchild of this organic and Fairtrade cotton development in India, highlighted within a golden frame that is being held up many of the cooperative’s workers who, like all true Fairtrade organizations, benefit from profit share.

Visit the Liv and Piccalilly websites to see the beautiful results at the end of this complex supply chain and for more information on where you can view this stunning exhibition.
