PHOTO BY SARAH PEET October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and a group of women volunteers has launched a new national non-profit called Swap for Good - a project to encourage people to host clothing swaps as a way to help raise money for domestic violence shelters. It's a win-win situation - participants get a new wardrobe for free, and have the option to donate a portion of the money they have saved from ‘swapping instead of shopping’ to help a local domestic violence shelter. During the recession, funding for shelters has plummeted while requests for help have gone up. The National Network to End Domestic Violence did a study that showed that in just one day, over 9,000 requests for help went un-met, largely due to lack of funds.
PHOTO BY SARAH PEET Some of the swaps are small private house-parties with friends in a living room, and others are big events in a public venue. Swap for Good is an all-volunteer project, with no paid staff, and no office - so there are no overhead costs and all the money raised by hosts goes directly to the cause. This month, Swap for Good is trying to have 100 events around the country for National Domestic Violence Awareness month. Swaps are already signed up in 13 states across the U.S. - you can check out the map of public events here; but keep in mind that events that are private do not show up on the map. Sign up and host a Swap for Good party today!

Excellent "out the wardrobe" thinking written by Ingrid, October 27, 2010
Just goes to show the resources are available to make a difference to people in need - but it takes a smart thinker to get them allocated correctly. Well done on the win-win.
