With not one crocheted toilet paper roll in sight, Victoria celebrated its premiere of the cult hit documentary “Handmade Nation” with Iconocraft, an unconventional craft fair featuring local designers and artists. The gala event included live performances from slam poets, djs and musicians, as well as an interview with guerrilla papercrafter Vinny Walleen and a DIY button making table. The sold-out show included crafting from recycled materials while raising funds to support both a kids’ summer camp and the Handmade Nation Film Fund.
Those within Victoria’s crafting community were excited for the opportunity to view this documentary by director and crafter Faythe Levine about the rise of DIY culture in North America. The film features artists and crafters who have found success making fashion, art and craft by hand, and though it focused on America – it still resonated with many of the west coast crafters.

Eco Fashion World was there, eating whisky-topped cupcakes and touring through the ‘fashion district’ which included designs made from vintage and recycled fabrics by Floating Gold Iceberg, handmade original pieces from Trapper Jane and items from Morena Clothing, who combine nostalgic laces with fresh eco fabrics to create unique yet wearable pieces.

Iconocraft proved that the cutting edge of craft in Victoria is bursting with talent, cultivating its own style ethos and decidedly eco-conscious.
