SETH AARON HENDERSON Have you ever looked to the sky to get inspiration for what to wear? Well, this year’s Portland Fashion Week (PFW), held at the waterfront shipyards in Portland, OR from October 6-10, will give new meaning to the phrase “brightening up your closet.” The theme, ‘Solar is the New Black’ guides the launch of Spring/Summer 2011 collections from over 20 designers and highlights the city of Portland’s commitment to sustainability. Headlining this year’s PFW is Seth Aaron Henderson, ecofashion designer and winner of Season 7 Lifetime Series ‘Project Runway.’ Inspired by his tour of Solar World’s brand new US headquarters in nearby Hillsboro, OR, Henderson’s collection embodies the partnership of haute couture and sustainability. He notes that his collection is a “fun mix of fantasy and ‘wearability’, hardness and softness—pieces that take concept and costume and connect them with reality.”
AMELIA TORO Other PFW designers include a mix of locals such as Seattle, WA-based Jesica Milton, Wyatt Orr , and Lizzie Parker, and collections from a French mother and daughter design team, Ethos Paris and Columbian designer, Amelia Toro. Each of these exhibitors practices ethical fashion in their garment design and production, in keeping with PFW’s commitment to sustainability. Since 2007 they have worked with the local environmental foundations to ensure that the energy powering PFW is 100% renewable, which is the first sustainable production of a fashion week internationally.
ETHOS PARIS : ED KAVISHE If a first in Eco Fashion isn’t enough to inspire you to check out Oregon’s most talked about fashion event, you’ll be excited to hear that designers from Lifetime’s ‘Project Runway’ are headlining this event. Henderson, and other alumni, Jonathan Joseph Peters and Jay Sario will showcase their first collections since their ‘Project Runway’ appearance. PFW is amassing a bit of a history with the Lifetime series as Leanne Marshall who won ‘Project Runway’ in 2008 stated in the event’s press release that the event made her name known. Consider checking out this solar-filled event and you’ll be certain to catch another star in the making.
