If the Eco Fashion Forward party was any indication, Vancouver is about to go to a whole new level with the upcoming Vancouver Eco Fashion Week in April 2010. The event is the brainchild of Miriam Laroche and draws from her 15 years of experience working in the fashion industry. Vancouver Eco Fashion Week seeks to put the “glamour” into the Ethical Fashion scene in Vancouver.

Held in the heart of downtown Vancouver, the event showcased several leading BC based ethical fashion brands including Nixxi, Adhesif Clothing, Ashley Watson , Dotted Loop, Kim Cathers, Elements, and We3 (founders of Tweet and Hottie). The night began with opening speeches from Lindsay Coulter from the David Suzuki foundation, and Kim Cathers, noted designer from Project Runway Canada, and board of director member of Our Social Fabric. Attendees were also treated to the musical stylings of up and coming Juno nominated singer Jill Barber.

I took the opportunity to catch up with some of the designers in attendance and picked up the latest news. For Adhesif, 2010 has started off with a bang. Adhesif’s spring line has received a lot of press, having been mentioned in Fashion Magazine and (soon in) Lou Lou. Nixxi had a great year in 2009, adding many stores and receiving growing online sales. When asked if she had any tips for upcoming designers, founder Jada Lee recommended to “start small” and have a clear vision of the look and brand. “Take time to refine your look” she advised.

After this warming-up event, we are now very much looking forward to Vancouver Fashion Week. We will keep you posted!
