Yesterday night, the visitors of the World Congress on Organic Cotton were treated to a fashion performance in the main hall of the Casino Kursaal in Interlaken. Seated in 12 rows, the 350 conference participants could have a close look at the models who paraded between the chairs in an unusual catwalk setting. The models showed items by four designers who all gave a really different interpretation of what can be done with organic cotton. Ghanian designer Kofi Ansah stayed close to his African roots with sending his models into the room touting giant calebasses on their heads. Ansah translated the blue traditionally Tuareg fabrics into post-modern silhouettes of the African woman carrying water to the village. A more subtle interpretation of his African roots was given by Imane Ayissi, who proved that simple white cotton fabrics can be ultra chic. The contemporary shapes, woven pleats and light materials gave his Spring/Summer collection ‘Fashion Ghosts’ an almost transparent appeal. A real surprise was the intricate jewellery pieces handcrafted by a women’s group in Kenya that gave an authentic touch to the collection. The two European designers showing were Banuq and Peter Ingwersen of Noir who went from earthy tones in casual day-to-day wear to leather, transparent black and white pieces. The audience, consisting of African cotton farmers, NGO representatives and CEOs of big fashion brands, was thrilled by the diversity of what organic cotton can offer. The WCOC ‘From Fashion to Sustainability’ will take place until Friday September 25. Photo courtesy of Stefan Salzmann.
