Deep rich sailor hues are going to take some of the grey out of next winter (although you will be mixing the new navy with your existing grey wardrobe)! And just as us environmentalistas rediscover this classic shade, traditionally navy clad politicians are starting to take green fashion more seriously.

That is just what happened on the opening day of London Fashion Week. The tone was set by Defra (Department For Environment Food and Rural Affairs) Minister Lord Hunt who announced the launch of The Sustainable Clothing Action Plan. The plan has brought together over 300 organizations, from high street retailers, to designers and textile manufacturers to battle the environmental impacts of ‘throw away fashion’. Concretely, some of these actions include:

  • Marks and Spencer, Tesco and Sainsbury committing to increase their ranges of Fair Trade and Organic, increasing take back and recovery of unwanted clothing and supporting fibers/fabrics that enable clothing recycling.
  • Nike applying their Considered Design ethos to improving the sustainability performance and innovation of all their product ranges.
  • Association of Charity Shops, Oxfam, Salvation Army Trading and Textile Recycling Association – increasing consumer awareness on the environmental benefits of clothing reuse as well as increasing clothing recovery infrastructure in the UK. They will open more “sustainable clothing” boutiques of high quality second-hand clothing and new sustainably designed garments.

You can view a detailed roadmap of the plan on the Defra website.

With all these good intentions in place, it was time to get a shot of inspiration from the Noir catwalk show. The Danish label was the first luxury label to take a stand on ethical workplace standards and tracking throughout the supply chain. In founder Peter Ingwersen own words: “We want to make Corporate Social Responsibility sexy!”. Sexy is still the name of the game for Fall 2009 with inspiring reinventions of some codes of classic bourgeoisie: rich navy silks mixed with copper sparkle for flowing evening dresses, grey suits were anything but stuffy and the gaiter made

its return to enhance both day and evening silhouettes. On another note we were very happy to see that there was no fur in this fall collection. Although Noir was using only fur certified by the high standards of the Kopenhagen Fur, we still feel that killing animals only for their pelts in a time when so many innovative materials are coming onto the market is a bit passé.
