Different styles of denim just keep revolving back into fashion. Students for the last four decades have known that a few good pairs of jeans are more durable than their lecturer’s latest theorem. Meanwhile, the style of jeans you rummaged out of your aunt’s closet for a ‘1980’s denim party’ last month might just prance down the catwalk again next season.

Because jeans are such a staple piece in many women’s wardrobes, it’s fabulous to discover more and more ethical and organic cotton denim options. Loomstate is one company which produces high-end fashion for ethically-aware consumers; their organic cotton jeans are a great cut and are sold by up-market retailers such as Barney’s in New York and other popular fashion outlets and boutiques. Loomstate’s ‘Pickford-Mirovia’ jeans are a flattering design and are available online if you do not happen to live near a department store that stocks them.

Meanwhile, a popular Canadian brand, Second Denim Co., has a great ECO collection which they promote by encouraging women to ‘take a Second to make the world a better place!’ Their mid-rise straight leg jean, known as ‘Justine’, is a combination of 97% organic cotton and 3% lycra for a comfortable, flattering fit.

Nudie Jeans Co., a Swedish company, has a genuine passion for the environment, human rights and… jeans! Their organic cotton jeans are made in a variety of shapes so as to be accessible to men and women alike! Some cuts are more suitable for women, obviously, including the (stretch) ‘Tight Long John’ and the ‘narrow boot’ jean. Check out their nifty store locator to see if there is a store near you (there are five near me and I live a long way from Sweden so you may be pleasantly surprised).

I have recently developed a bit of a crush on Howie’s in the UK, who have a really great way of combining femininity, practicality and fit. Their denim ‘apron skirt’ is a great causal summer skirt and their organic jeans are all about comfort; like the Iris Jean that is made for walks along the beach – or the Malarca Jean, available in Indigo or Chocolate, eco-balled for softness and that natural, worn-in look.

It’s a classic look; girls in denim – and, because it’s so durable, buying good denim really is a long term investment. So don’t hesitate to fill up your wardrobe with fabulous ethical and organic denim clothes today, knowing that making ethical choices now will mean a brighter future for the blue-jean-babies of tomorrow…
