BOOK REVIEW: ECO FASHION BY SASS BROWN
Written by Magaly Fuentes - Friday, 11 March 2011

Introduced with a compelling view of why eco fashion exists today, divided into five carefully segregated chapters, written in newly established but easy-to-understand 'sustainable fashion prose', and enhanced with a glossary at the back for reference, Eco Fashion by Sass Brown is an impressive compilation of philosophy, design, art, innovation and education.

The foreword written by Geoffrey B. Small includes some shocking statistics that are bound to hit the soul with ferocity. The comparison of population growth to the rate of depletion of our natural resources is something that should be on the mind of every human being. He correctly points to the failures of the fashion industry and the necessary changes that need to be made. Small calls Eco Fashion timely, as the clock is ticking and there is no second to waste in creating a new outline for the future.

The chapters, individually titled "Community and Fair Trade," "Ecological and Slow Design," "Recycle, Reuse and Redesign," "New Models," and "Designer and Corporate Initiatives," each highlight some of the major players in the eco fashion industry today. Along with images that reflect the beauty and originality in the products offered by each label, Sass Brown also manages to share the history, goals, and initiatives of each brand.

The sustainable fashion movement is astonishing in a world where fast fashion has ruled for so many years. Eco Fashion is proof positive that people are opening their eyes and willing to go the extra mile in creating their products in a way that is not only safe for the environment, but also enriching the lives of so many people involved in the process.

Sass Brown is a professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, and lives in Florence, Italy, where she is Resident Director for its overseas program. Brown has also worked in the area of development, creating collections for manufacturers and even working on her own collection. Her passion for education and fashion is expressed clearly and beautifully in Eco Fashion. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in fashion or sustainability issues – the combination of the two is beyond relevant in today's world.
