My grandfather was a sheep-farmer who believed denim was something that the shearers wore, not to be worn out in public – things have changed!

Being a farmer himself, I think he would appreciate the effort that went into creating a product and fully approve of Allie Hewson and (U2 singer) Bono’s fashion label, Edun, that strives to give farmers in Tunisia a fair go from ‘grow to sew’. Edun is on the brink of releasing their next season’s jeans for men – with a bit of luck you will find them at a location near you.

Another popular option is Loomstate which offers an impressive range of high quality eco-friendly jeans. An oldie, but a goodie, their style known as Mission is a classic cut that has been with the company since their early days – Mission is a regular pair of jeans: regular waist, five pockets and relaxed straight leg available in dark or light blue organic denim. Loomstate also creates shirts, tees, jackets (and clothes for the ladies) which are well worth checking out. Loomstate is available through retailers in the US, Canada, the UK, Europe and Asia, as well as online.

For a masculine, authentic, worn-in style try the collections from Kuyichi; Kuyichi is a fair trade Dutch label so committed to looking after the people behind your jeans that you can even jump on their website to track and trace where your jeans were designed, where the cotton was picked and where your clothes were created. Their designs are laid back yet appealing. Kuyichi’s Daniel is also a great pair of casual jeans with an authentic, worn in look and hand-made repair details. They are created from discarded 12 oz Japanese denim to further put an emphasis on waste reduction.

For something a bit more refined check out Nau’s regular straight jean; a classic look styled with suit-quality tailoring for comfort and durability. Similarly Nau’s slack-er jean is a comfortable, light crisp pair of pants made with 9 oz organic cotton - more like a chino and available in dark indigo. Nau also has a slim tapered jean made from unworn, un-distressed organic cotton, with a tapered leg cut and dyed a dark shade.

If you are looking for the skinny leg cut you might want to check out Levi’s Eco Skinny 511 Jeans – Eco Blue Flame. This is Levi’s slimmest fit, sitting just below the waist and skimming the leg to the ankle. Similarly, Kuyichi’s Collin is cut in a low sitting slim fit made from 11 _ oz organic cotton denim, dyed a tone of pure indigo, and created under fair-trade conditions in Tunisia.

And last but not least, there are the much loved Howie’s practical Drifter Jeans, or (even better) their Epic Drover Jeans; made from 12 oz cotton denim, with five pockets and a slightly slimmer fit than their regular Drover Jeans. These pants are fabulous for those who live in a wet climate because they are made from Epic water resistant denim. Next time you are caught riding in the rain with your jeans plastered to your legs, consider investing in a pair that the rain drops bead and slide off of as opposed to soaking you wet right through. They are organic and manly to boot. Now, there is a pair of jeans my grandfather would approve of…
