SUE ROCKS KNITWEAR
As if creating beautiful ethical fashion with recycled or organic materials wasn’t enough, some eco fashion companies push things even further by creating charities that empower communities. In this season of giving, here are two inspiring examples of this. Sue Rock Originals Everyone, Inc is the only textile charity committed to supporting the lives of survivors of domestic violence. With such a small percentage of women leaving domestic violence situations nationwide, it was important to provide direct support to these women who have made the courageous first steps towards change. Each year SROE partners volunteers with the raw materials to create NEW clothing and accessories women will need as they leave domestic violence residences. Many times women leaving the cycle of violence only have the clothes on their back once entering a residence. Volunteers create handknit and hand crocheted sweaters, shrugs, bags, tops and so much more! Sue Rocks has established relationships with Safe Horizon, the Brooklyn District Attorney's Family Justice Center and Sanctuary for Families and part of their mission is to provide training in all aspects of the textiles arts - including knitting crocheting, sewing/tailoring, macrame and needlepoint. The non-profit has a unique funding engine - Sue Rock Originals, an eco-fashion brand of women's separates selling at boutiques throughout the NY area. Using reclaimed fabrics from the interior design and garment industries, Sue Rock Originals has a line of "Back to Basics" separates, which are flattering to every figure!
THE ANDEAN COLLECTION
We’ve already told you about the beautiful jewelry created by The Andean Collection, but beyond the jewelry, lies an ambitious endeavor: The Andean Project. The mission of The Andean Project, in collaboration with The Andean Collection www.theandeancollection.com is to promote the economic, cultural and social rights of its artisans and their families. These rights are collectively defined as the rights to basic human needs, such as to housing, food, decent employment, cultural identity, health services, and education.
SUE ROCKS
The Andean Project's first initiative will pay the secondary school fees for their artisans and artisans' children, who live in the poverty stricken coastal and mountainous regions of Ecuador. Costs associated with attending high school amount to approximately $300/student per year. In Ecuador where the per capita income is $7,500 per year and 40% of the population lives in poverty, the costs associated with attending high school are often a strong barrier to pursuing secondary education. The AC is currently available in over 50 high-end boutiques nationwide, including eco-fashion boutiques Kaight and Sustainable NYC in Manhattan. Customers can also purchase the line online at www.theandeancollection.com.
