There's something so refreshing about a new year. As the beginning of 2011 is in full swing, many of us contemplate the year that has passed and look forward to a new 365 days filled with hope and new opportunities.

Practicing an old Cuban tradition, my mom takes a bucket of water at midnight, opens the front door and dumps the water out of the bucket to symbolize a welcome to a new year with a fresh clean start. I like to make a list of goals for the New Year and one of my ongoing goals is to pay more attention to environmental issues and gradually make any changes I can to contribute to the health of our planet.

With the drop of the ball in New York City's Time Square, the chimes of London's Big Ben, the water swept over Buddha statues in the Far East, and the flap of saffron colored flags outside of homes in Maharashtra, I welcome 2011 with open arms and challenge you to take a step further with me!

Gather staple items and accessories that are versatile so you can stretch their use into tons of different outfits. Here are a few tips to get you going:

Knots and Stones

Knots and Stones rings made of naturally sustainable tagua nuts make a colorful statement and are quite easy on the pocketbook while priced between $24 and $30. The rings come in a multitude of colors and in a solid style as well as animal and batik prints, perfect for mixing and matching with any outfit!

Kuyichi

Jeans + Leggings = Jeggings, which happen to be a staple item this winter. Wear them with a large pullover sweater or tee or slip them on under a dress or skirt to keep your legs warm. Check out the many fashion forward options from Kuyichi, including organic cotton jeggings, jeans and jackets, organic cotton t-shirts, recycled wool and polyester jackets, and comfy sweaters for women and men.

Necklush

Necklush

Handprinted and handmade in Brooklyn, NY, check out the Necklush. The Necklush is a unisex accessory made in many different colors and either as a stranded necklace or as a scarf. It can be worn over a strapless dress as a great accent piece or guys can simply wear it as a scarf with jeans and a tee. Play with it to dress an ensemble up or down.

Loomstate

Loomstate

I think most people will agree that a great tee goes a long way. Loomstate offers 100% organic options in solid colors as well as some unique prints like the one on the Headdress style tees available in a few colors for both men and women.

PACT

Start with your first layer by embracing PACT organic cotton underwear. Colored with low impact dyes in fun prints, PACT supports a variety of philanthropic causes in an effort to make the world a better place.

Ok, now it's your turn – get creative, mix and match, have fun and remember it's all for a great cause.
