PEOPLE TREE
As more and more days turn cool, some days even Siberian, you may begin to miss all those thin and breezy summer clothes. Fortunately, there are some easy ways to maximize your closet and turn any light clothing into a season-less powerhouse. And what could be greener than shopping your closet? One trend that is as practical as it is fun is the long glove trend. But that makes texting difficult, so fingerless mittens and arm warmers come to the rescue. In rich colors, and by pairing different shades, the effect is romantic rather than tramp. Stewart+Brown’s Elvira arm wearers boast clever details like buttons and striped patterns for the true arm warmer connoisseur. Why let your arms have all the fun? Legwarmers aren’t just for 80’s aerobics queens any more. If you dare, Sassy Knitwear offers them in all the colors. Stewart+Brown sticks with a more limited palette, and either pair would look wonderful over tights and beneath a pair of boots to keep you warm on a skirt day. Who needs pants anymore?

And for even more stylish winterizing wardrobe ideas: 1. Throwing a jacket on it is always a solution for transitional seasons. Organic by John Patrick does it up in sumptuous black leather. Annie Greenable’s cotton-blend blazer has the same long lines and boyfriend-inspired look for much less. Basically, this type of jacket can go over anything.

Pair bold prints like Ascension Originals Autumn Dress with black tights and bold booties, or basic black like the Nadia Boot from vegan-luxe line Sui Generis. Wear a more substantial dress, like Dutch street-flavored brand Kuyichi’s Magic Dress over tights, leggings, skinny pants, longer skirts, or whatever you may have. For tights, Sternlein has ethically minded options in a variety of colors, textures, and even a wool option. Black leggings hold in even more heat and are more modest under ultra-minis, and there are fortunately abundant options like those from Sworn Virgins, Nixxi, and Frank and Faith. 3. If even more steel against the chill is needed, sub-in knee length boots and layer with basic long sleeve tees, turtlenecks, and cardigans. SPUN offers a basic black cardigan in organic cotton for a smashing price. For a more luxurious option, choose Peligrosa Knits’s hand-dyed cashmere cardigan. On the footwear front, PoZu’s sheepskin booties feel as warm as they look. And finding the perfect knee-length boot with eco-credentials may be a tall order, but Coclico has a sophisticated selection of season-less boots that will pair with any skirt, dress, or even any formal shorts you may have lurking in your closet.
KUYICHI
Tubular scarves like Perfectly Imperfect’s cranberry model bring warmth without the fuss, or supersize it with a chunky-knit snood for ultimate effect—and heat. UK’s People Tree offers a fabulous array of winter-busting knitted accessories. Be Sweet offers not only knitted accessories made by the Xhosa tribe in South Africa, but also designer hand-painted yarn and specialty patterns if you are of the knitting persuasion. Shokay supports Tibetan yak herders and Chinese artisans with its line of hand-knit accessories. UK eco-stalwart Komodo has a more urban spin on gloves, scarves, and hats in a subdued, military palette. 5. It may be necessary to pull out the big guns—thermal undergarments. New Zealand’s appropriately named eco-label Icebreaker features undergarments made of merino wool from ranches with the some of the most exacting ethical standards on the planet. Gloves, hats, scarves, coats and any other essential for warmth are also available. Patagonia also offers baselayers, this time made from recycled polyester. It will be your little secret this winter.
