VEGGIES, POTATO AND VALESS

'We had veggies, potato and Valess tonight, so we're really on the bio track now', my brother said the other day. Big question marks???? This to me sounded like the most ordinary Dutch dish you can imagine, not specifically eco at all. It was only one hour later that I understood his word-joke when we started talking about Skinny Bitch.

My brother and his wife have become parents three months ago and have started researching what they eat and how it effects my niece. Skinny Bitch showed them what to eat to keep them and the baby healthy and made them especially aware about the meat industry. They were shocked seeing videos of how animals are being treated and immediately started purchasing soy products. And this is what my brother joked about: The Dutch word for meat (vlees) basically sounds the same as Valess which is a soy product substituting meat.

Of course I am thrilled that my least e-conscious family members are inspired to live a more healthy lifestyle. I realize that all my years of persuasion tactics were not effective. While my niece is. I also realize that I have been too harsh on all the women that have entered the eco fashion industry the past years. At one point I became tired of hearing the same story: 'I became a mum and started thinking about the planet my child would grown up on. This is when I started my eco fashion brand'. Now I have seen from close by that the life changing event of giving birth, really changes people's mindsets.

Maybe my family will become really enticed and start wearing vegan shoes one day. They loved my new TOEst boots from Simple so who knows what's next. And how will it change me when I become a mum myself?
