THE BODY ISSUE, MAY 2009

With the arrival of spring, newsstands fill up with magazines boasting to give you the answers to achieving your dream body: “Loose 5 pounds in one week”, “Diet without hunger”. Sometimes a really edgy editor will manage to sway the theme to “love the body you’re in, great looks for every shape”. But what if we looked at the body in a different way? What if we could just be grateful for what we have? Our health, the use of our arms and our legs, the fact that even a flat chested woman can breastfeed.

Our first stop in this alternative exploration of “the body issue” was an interview with a different kind of designer: Chris Ambraisse of A&K Classics beat the odds of a difficult childhood and gained a perspective and compassion that have given him the drive to design the first line of fashion forward clothes that’s adapted to disabled as well as able-bodied people.

We then turned to the body mind connection provided by yoga to inspire our selection of favorite things for men and women. Although we usually present more edgy and streetwise looks, this was also an opportunity to pay tribute to the yoga and active-wear brands that were in fact the pioneers of eco clothing.

From yoga to Pilates, we found the inspiration for our store of the month, Embodies is a physical and online boutique that knows women’s bodies inside and out since the space doubles as a Pilates studio!

We hope you enjoy this issue and send us your comments!
