Mitumba refers to the discarded textiles that leave the European mainland in big containers to be shipped to Africa where they are sold on local markets. Project mitumBACK, based in Vienna, changes the direction of this global process. The young crew behind mitumBACK buys donated clothes that were transported to Tanzania. After careful selection of the items, they employ African embroiderers to create handmade labels, which signify these clothes as a new way of art and cultural understanding. With this new label they are reintegrated into the Western market and on special occasions they are sold in the "mitumBACK - pop up store". As a trans fair label, the crew doesn't have set prices but a different approach to payment. The idea is that you 'pay as you please' with three different price models to give you some insight behind the whole process of 'reverse engineering globalization'. With the profit, the mitumBACK team finances schools and microfinance projects in Africa. MitumBACK isn't just a brand, it is also a scientific experiment to rethink global structures, codes and habits based on classical models through art, science and fashion. The goal of the project is to connect people and to transfer knowledge in both directions, beyond clichés and borders. MitumBACK exhibits this month from June 6-30 in Vienna.
