PRELOVED
If you’re in Toronto and want to shop some eco-fabulous pieces, check out Queen street West! Here you will find some of the best eco fashion stores in town in addition to vintage boutiques leading you right into hip Kensington Market. Starting on the most western end, Thieves on number 1156 deserves a timely visit as all pieces in this shop carry a story. Designer Sonja den Elzen runs her store like a gallery and will always surprise you with her avant-garde window displays and visual merchandising in the store. Nature plays a big role in her installations and the clothing and accessories just seem to blend in organically. Aside from carrying her own label Thieves, Sonja curates other pieces by local jewellery and accessories designers. Further down on number 881, reclaimed label Preloved runs its successful flagship store. Founded in 1995, the collections consist of future-wear, beautifully rebuilt out of clothing from the past. Scraps of forgotten workpants appear as an elegant evening gown and curtains are reborn as stunning summer skirts. Preloved clothes are always highly identifiable, while still “one of a kind”. Aside from their Toronto store, Preloved has boutiques in Montreal and in Sydney Australia and ships all over the world.
AIME
On number 764 Queen Street West, you should stop by Ziliotto where Jennifer and her husband sell women, kids and baby clothing and accessories. Jennifer created her own women’s line in organic fabrics which also caters perfectly to the pregnant woman. In addition, they carry beauty and bath products, pottery and paintings from local artists, all hand-made and unique. Keep on walking on Queen to be surprised by pop-up stores like the ones Aime and friends irregularly open. Further down, you will come across several vintage boutiques where you can browse additional items for your wardrobe. Where Queen crosses Spadina, the street becomes more like a high street where you can find stores like H&M and shoe label Aldo. If you want to keep browsing more unique finds, turn left on Spadina and continue into Kensington market. Here you will find more vintage shops in addition to organic food stores, little fair-trade coffee places and funky restaurants. Plan your visit at the end of a nice summer’s day and you will surely have a great time!
