| THE CARDBOARD CURIOSITY SHOP |
| Written by Megan Weston - Sunday, 06 June 2010 | |
Located on 5th Avenue of the 1930s Brixton Village arcade in South London, is a new brand of concept store. Think Urban Outfitters but everything you buy makes you feel good. Circus, owned by Tabitha Rout and Binki Taylor, is filled with ethical fashion, original art, upcycled accessories and thrift shop goodies, all displayed on a honeycomb cardboard interior. The cardboard shelving and boxes are all fully adaptable, compostable and recyclable. And you can have your own cardboard dining table, lamp or mirror should your heart desire. Binki explained, “It's about sparking curiosity and invoking a bit of passion for beautiful things.” From concept to construction, it was important for the partners to fulfill their environmental ethos. So the interiors inspiration came from the bundles of cardboard at the market squashed together ready to be recycled. “The response has been fantastic from everybody who has seen the shop,” added Binki. Circus will soon be stocking a new line of upcycled leather bags designed by Tabitha. Her folk-inspired 'festival bag' is constructed from patch-worked reclaimed leather into a low-slung cross-body envelope bag. The girls have also collaborated with textile designer Melanie Bowles to create the 'market skirt', a digitally printed organic skirt inspired by the corrugated cardboard. Future collaborations include a range of upcycled chairs by Studio DB (the design team behind the cardboard wonderland) and Circus will also be launching a range of candles in partnership with a local charity. The store will be a hub for lifestyle workshops, swishing events and collaborations, and there are plans to move the concept online said Binki. In the mean time, a visit to London's first cardboard shop is well worth the miles. Comments (2)
