FASHION SOCIAL
JunkyStyling.jpg

The Ethical Fashion Forum has started their Ethical Fashion Socials last September with local meetings around the world. This month’s London event will take place at the Junky Styling shop on Dray Walk and the topic is retail. Questions addressed will be: What's selling and why? What are consumers looking for? How interested are they in the ethics behind what they buy?

JARGON BUSTER @PURE

Last week we reported about the confusion around sustainable fashion jargon that FT editor Vanessa Friedman brought up. It seems that Made-By has taken direct action with distributing the Jargon Buster, a fashion calendar with a word defined for each month of 2010. The MADE-BY ‘Jargon Buster’ explains and defines commonly used terms such as ‘green’, ‘sustainable’, and ‘natural’ in simple, easy to understand language.

MEAN GREEN

Last week the Financial Times published an article written by its fashion editor Vanessa Friedman on what sustainable fashion actually means. In the article, Friedman takes a critical stance towards the fuzziness that surrounds the concept of sustainable fashion. I would like to bring in a few counter-arguments to encourage people to keep on supporting this paradigm shift in the business of fashion.

INSPIRATION: PEACOCK

It’s fun to link what we wear to the world we’re living in, so I’ve been browsing for pieces lately that play towards the themes or patterns I see all around me. I’d like to start with one of nature’s most exquisite themes: the peacock feather.

A DEEPER SHADE OF GREEN

We were delivered to this amazing planet without care instructions to guide us. Fortunately, the green movement has opened our eyes to the need for reevaluation, change, and a more definitive accountability system when it comes to protecting and nurturing our environment.

GMO IN ORGANIC COTTON

Last week, during Germany’s Fashion week, an article on GMO in organic cotton in the German Financial Times has caused enormous controversy. The article, printed under the banner headline of Label Scandal, claims that German retailers sold India sourced certified organic textiles “knowing that there were traces of GMO cotton in them.” A wide number of retailers and NGOs have cried foul, alleging that they have been misquoted and that the assertions in the article are unfounded, exaggerated or unsubstantiated. Organic Exchange has immediately distributed a press release giving explanations for the case of GMO in organic cotton.

When the results are in, Daisygreen will make the ‘best ever’ ethical bra, fairly made from eco-friendly fabric.
