Aside from the official Fashion Weeks, new collections and brands are presented seasonally at trade shows. In September, Paris was home to major collaborative happenings: Who’s Next, Premiere Classe and Prêt-à-Porter Paris (PAPP) as well as others taking place simultaneously at the Porte de Versailles exhibition halls. Nested in the cradle of PAPP was So Ethic, an area dedicated to sustainable fashion brands for what it seemed like its last edition.

EFW Guide member Kaight hosted a Prairie Underground trunk show in New York City on September 22nd. EFW stopped by to meet some of the customers who dropped in to check out the great new fall 2011 styles.

The Ethical Fashion Show in Paris is one of the must-attend events of the year for anybody working or interested in sustainable fashion. It was held in the beautiful setting of the Carrousel du Louvre, and conveniently matched dates with more established fashion trade shows of the season, such as Premiere Classe, Who's Next, and Pret-a-Porter. It was the perfect occasion to discover new brands, for industry professionals to meet and exchange ideas, and to give public access to a dedicated fashion event.

When Vogue editor Anna Wintour first had her brilliant idea to create a night of fashion for all, she could not possibly have envisioned how far this idea would reach. Fashion's Night Out is not merely an opportunity for the masses to celebrate their love of clothing design in a public way; ethical brands across the US are now participating on many levels.

The world of couture is known for opulence and grandeur, and these themes weigh heavily when we conjure Paris Fashion Week in our minds. But one group of the fashionably-minded looks to push through these limiting stereotypes to create something truly impacting, the Ethical Fashion Show.

The competition is inspired by the incredible buzz and bustle being created in their hometown of London England for the 2012 summer Olympics. Embracing the positive, humanist, bridge building ideals behind the creation of the original Olympics, People Tree has created a graphic design competition along these lines:

Topshop and British wool label, Izzy Lane, have paired up to launch a premium coat range for the fall season. The line includes three different styles that are covetable for cold winters. The coats are made from Wensleydale and Shetland sheep that Lane saved and raised on her North Yorkshire property.

Leave it to Portland to host a back-alley fashion show where the drawings of cultural icons watch as models brave the makeshift catwalk wearing locally made clothing that ranges from 1940's inspired day dresses to boldly colored lingerie.

Eco-Chic: The Fashion Paradox analyzes the relationship between sustainability and fashion, a complicated one that is ever-evolving, and also sheds some much needed light on the seeming contradiction within the term 'eco-chic'.

Tara St.James

 

Tara St James is an incredible designer and mentor. After working as the creative director for Covet, Tara launched her own label Study in 2009 and has swiftly established herself as a key innovator in the ethical fashion scene. Her intelligent zero waste designs and constant collaborations with artists and textile designers are probably the key components to her success. A firm believer in open sourcing, Tara has also set up the Study Hall project, throwing interns into the deep end. Each intern is given the skills and guidance to create their own collections which they then sell to stockists.

Eco Fashion World spent a fun filled weekend at EPIC, Vancouver’s sustainable living expo. The team had a great time at the tradeshow with the eco-fashion marketplace and fashion shows, a sustainable wedding-showcase, numerous beauty products to browse through, and a chic local foods and beverage tasting lounge. We snapped some shots of some stylish eco attendees, and asked them what they were wearing.
