Such is the moto of Maroussia Rebecq, the creator of the Andrea Crews collective. A jack of many trades, Rebecq surprises us at every turn with her out-of-this-world creations.
As early as 1999, Rebecq, then a fine arts student in Bordeaux, put
on a fashion show at the city’s museum of Contemporary Art featuring
recycled creations from the Salvation Army. In 2001, she created the
Andrea Crews collective, which has since been producing fashion, events
and artistic performances in Paris and abroad.
In a recent interview with Vidya Narine of Rendez-Vous
Rebecq explained: “Before being a brand, Andrea Crews is a concept, a
proposition of production: recycling, exchange, community. Clothes are
just an easy, funny and pop way to transmit a message to a community.
At the moment, everything is “hand made in Paris”. It’s an enormous
gain of energy and creativity. Andrea Crews is totally “D.I.Y.”, every
season we learn a bit more and working in Paris allows us to react very
quickly to the propositions! If I have an idea today, it can be made
tomorrow! To be a designer is not a fantasy, it’s now a reality and we
have to be able to assume the pertinence of the offer.”
So what’s pertinent today? Last Friday, we went looking for the answer at Andrea Crews’ Spring 2009 show at the Jeu de Paume Museum during Paris Fashion Week.
The answers according to Rebecq, is a gang of galactic amazons…the
Sunset Empire collection featured skimpy outfits made out of unusual
materials like string and hair, voile and sequins. For the less daring
of us, there were also the brand’s signature upcycled embroidered
sweaters, hoodies, as well as easy dresses mixing block colors with
traditional African prints.
Not on the catwalk, but also noteworthy, are Andrea Crews creative
collaborations such as the recent Andrea Fusion collection with Modafusion.
