The notion of a designer collective is in many ways as eco savvy as you can get. Not only do collectives find resourceful and innovate ways for creating their collections, but the mission of eco fashion and sustainability is often bolstered by a united effort. Enter NYC-based Eko-Lab and their six-person team of organic and fair-trade minded eco designers. With an impressive debut at this September’s New York Fashion Week and further accolades in store at the Green Market showcase at Designer & Agents in Los Angeles this weekend, Eko-Lab is redefining covetable, artisanal designer wear for eco fashionistas in the know.
Who can resist garments fashioned from organic hemps, cottons, and linens hand dyed with Earthues tints or sculpturally soft organic wool, hand-felted with rainwater and vegetable soap? The intricate crochet and lace work in Eko-Lab’s designs are as reflective of the web of the natural world as their hand-drawn prints of animals on the endangered species list. With pieces meant to be worn across seasons and for generations to come, the detailing of their designs smartly translates to stylishly versatile and investment-savvy. With global markets in current upheaval, it is good to know that there are some new enterprises that couple stability with vision as well as glamour with collaborative solutions.
