“Paris will always have haute couture and prêt-à-porter, London has its street-savvy style, New York has its sportswear. The DNA here is ethics, equality and high quality”, these words of wisdom from Noir designer and founder Peter Ingwersen sum up the rising importance of ethics in Scandinavian fashion.

And what better way to ethically kick off Copenhagen Fashion Week than the launch of the Nordic Fashion Association’s NICE project. The Nordic Initiative Clean & Ethical (NICE) is an ambitious project that aims to lead the Nordic fashion industry towards a stronger focus on ethical

and sustainable production. Some of the immediate goals of the association are the creation of a “Fashion Summit” to be held during the UN Cimate Change Conference in Copenhagen in 2009, the establishment of research and education programs, a website www.nicefashion.org, partnerships with schools and the creation of a Code of Conduct for the Nordic

fashion industry. Helmed by five key players: Helsinki Design Week, Oslo Fashion Week, the Danish Fashion Institute, the Icelandic Fashion Counsel and the Swedish Fashion Counsel, this will be a fascinating example of cross country collaboration and policy implementation.

One of the Nordic brands presenting their new Spring/Summer 2009 collection at Copenhagen Fashion Week and already leading the way in sexy sustainable fashion is Noir. Aside from the sleek tailored pieces and shiny night-shade fabrics that have made its reputation, Noir showed its first forays into pattern and a ligher breazier side with flowing dresses and featherlight tops.

For those of us who want the look at a lesser price, Noir has also launched a new sub brand, Bllack Noir, featuring the same edgy urban esthetic with a younger twist and a wider distribution. The label is set to launch soon in department stores throughout Europe, the US and Asia.

With these new developments in the works, we hope that next year’s Copenhagen Fashion Week will be an occasion for us to discover many new northern eco-designers!
