Healing the world can start with healing yourself. With that mindset, the Larkspur, California shop Embodies offers a completely sustainable selection with an ostensibly body-conscious feel. Form and function blend perfectly in a committed movement to improve the planet one choice at a time. Owner Kenlynn Wilson trained as an architect and ballet dancer and the boutique reflects a healing from within approach. The store doubles as a Gyrotonics/ Pilates studio and was renovated with a strict eye for eco-friendly materials, from the paint to the reclaimed lighting. Even the mannequins are part of the ethical mantra, one being of organic material, the other two are reclaimed – one from Niketown to show how clothing looks on a more muscled form, the other covered in woven grass from Wilson’s backyard. Feeling good from the inside out is the overriding principle of Embodies.
The organic clothing goes far beyond studio wear. Haute pieces from designers such as Linda Loudermilk reside alongside daywear from Perfectly Imperfect. Wilson’s selection is both broad and discerning, the choices work well together to blended into any closet. The clothes have a definite nod to an active lifestyle, one that is often in transition from work to working out to going out. Cover up after class with the Apres Sweatshirt from Om Girl or a henley tunic from Josh Podoll. Show off your hard work in Lara Miller’s backless blouse with a demure neckline that can do double duty for work under a jacket. Layer to go or lounge in cozy pants from Prairie Underground. The thoughtful collection includes accessories and shoes, from pleated white nearly-flats from Form & Fauna, to a convertible boot with a footbed guaranteed to mold to the contours of your foot from Po-zu. Linda Loudermilk designed a necklace with a faucet pendant on a leather strap for the “Water is a Human Right” project, all proceeds from the gift set, which includes the book Blue Covenant by Maude Barlow, go to The Blue Planet Project, an organization dedicated to achieving water justice now. The store features limited runs and local designers, often holding trunk shows to display the new finds. Tinc takes on the wrap dress with a more urban aesthetic. Loungewear takes on a romantic air with a cami and bloomers from Under the Canopy. Finally, wear breathable cotton beneath everything or on its own with a beautiful French-designed lingerie set from Les Fees de Bengale featuring butterfly details and feminine lines.
