Recently in Bryant Park, the location of New York Fashion Week, dogs strutted their stuff down the ‘cat’-walk for the Fashion Institute of Technology’s Pet Fashion Show. The event epitomized the recent trend of extending fashion to our four-legged-friends; it’s not simply a matter of keeping our pooches warm and dry – they have become an accessory to brush down, dress up and show off. According to Joan Volpe, who co-ordinates the fashion institute’s Center for Professional Studies: “Pet apparel and related products represent a close to $50 billion industry that is proving to be comparatively recession-proof.”

For the eco-conscious dog-owner there are loads of options to make sure your dog’s carbon-paw-print is minimized as eco friendly products for pets become increasingly available. Dog fashion crafted from organic cotton and hemp or using recycled or ‘left-over’ materials are becoming progressively popular.

Companies such as Eco-Hound in America specialize in environmentally friendly dog-clothes for the ‘chill dog’ as well as organic dog treats and dog care products and even sell ‘washable piddle pads’! Eco-Hound stocks a range of very cool t-shirts for ‘rock n’ roll’ dogs created by The Haute Hound Pet Boutique, including the “Recycle. Adopt a Dog” organic cotton t-shirt. And what about this adorable organic cotton bandana in picknick look?

If you’re looking for something simpler for your pooch, American Apparel also stocks Organic Baby Rib fitted T-shirts for dogs of all sizes which are cut especially “to avoid doggie mess”. The t-shirts are made from 100% Organic cotton and are available online. Sckoon Organics New York stocks organic fashion for women and children and has just released Designer Dog Clothes including Organic Cotton t-shirts, soft-toys and cool kimonos.

The Orange Greens are one brand that is already popular on the doggy-‘cat-walk’ with their range of organic, natural and environmentally friendly clothes and products for ‘man’s best friend’. The OrangeGreens ‘puppoose’ is a trendy, light-weight pup carrier made for carrying small dogs which comes in small, medium and large and is available online in a variety of colors.

Meanwhile, in Australia, all natural grooming is becoming a priority for eco-conscious dog-lovers and stores such as Brisbane’s Nose 2 Tail dog grooming salon which offers products that are totally natural, sulfate and paraben free. Stores also carry organic and natural dog treats such as Sweet Chops, doggie cupcakes, paw shaped, dog-friendly chocolate treats and birthday cakes.

These practices echo a world-wide interest in canine fashion including costumes, coats and carriers for the animal known as ‘man’s best friend’. With upscale dog boutiques and posh puppy pampering outlets popping up around the globe it is not surprising that the trend has caught on amongst eco-conscious, fair-trade pet-lovers. As the market for pet fashion continues to grow undoubtedly more environmentally friendly designer dog apparel will grace the ‘cat’-walk alongside the already popular OrangeGreens in the upcoming Annual Pet Fashion Week NY…
