GREEN FABRICS AT PREMIERE VISION
Written by Kim Poldner - Friday, 03 October 2008

GREEN-FABRICS.jpg Great news for all you ambitious conscious designers out there: more and more crazy, sexy, cool eco fabrics are being developed as we speak! Last year it was like finding a needle in a haystack, but this year, Paris fabric fair Premiere Vision had clearly indicated the companies offering eco fabrics. One thing that lacked however, was that the sales people of the 50 bamboo fabric suppliers and 75 eco cotton companies couldn’t say much yet about the eco credentials and sources of the fabrics, which leaves room for improvement next year.

Japanese fabric house Avanti had one of the most crowded booths throughout the fair. Their offer of wovens and non-wovens as well as beautiful denims all made out of organic cotton, clearly showed the increasing demand for these kind of fabrics.

Lenzing also impressed us with their super fine Modal fabric made out of wood pulp that carries the EU Ecolabel.

GREEN-FABRICS1.jpgThe Italian company Calamai was another remarkable player in the fast growing eco fabric market. They started in 1878, collecting woolen rags which they made into so called “tearwool”. This original idea has since been developed into a highly innovative technology for transforming used cotton products into new fabric. Aside from cotton and wool, Calamai also works with PET, coconut and corn flour.

For the non-designers amongst us, we’ll probably have to wait a few seasons before these state of the art fabrics end up in our wardrobes, but we are anxious to see how the novelties will inspire eco and mainstream designers alike!
