| ORGANIC COTTON, ONWARD AND UPWARD |
| Written by Kim Poldner - Saturday, 24 January 2009 | |
If there was still any doubt that organic cotton can be used for high fashion, John Patrick, whom we interviewed for our FIBER magazine issue, has surely dispelled it! It's now time for other designers to start using this incredible fabric. This is one of the points Organic Exchange talks about in its latest Market Advisory to be released mid February. The global organic cotton market experienced steady growth in 2008 despite the global economic downturn. However, organic cotton production outpaced demand in 2008 and fiber inventories held by merchants, spinners and integrated mills increased significantly. Given these possible market conditions, Organic Exchange encourages participants in the organic cotton market to assess the risks and opportunities they face, and make informed choices about planting, fiber purchases, and product offerings. Brands may want to explore opportunities for expanding their organic programs with their business partners, as supplies of organic fiber, yarns and fabrics are more available than in previous years. And as for us consumers, let’s keep asking for this amazing fiber. It’s our demand, one garment at a time, which creates the offer. So slip on your JPO or your Kuyichis and be an organic trailblazer!
