Tiananmen, May 68, the Sexual Revolution of the 70’s…most massive societal changes start in campuses, carried by the idealism and energy of students.

Sustainability is no different, except that this time around the revolution is quieter. But in universities throughout the world, young people are gathering through associations and common projects to shape the consciousness of their peers and their common future. More and more, these projects seem to revolve around eco fashion.

As Anne Salaün of Oïkos (Students for Sustainable Economics and Management) Reims explains: “Created last year, Oïkos Reims has become a dynamic association. Through various activities, the group is promoting sustainable development to the students of Reims Management School, which is not an easy task. We’re encouraging people to restrain their consumption, while in class, they’re learning that consumption is good and that they should be able to sell anything to anyone!

STUDENT-2.jpgThat's why Oïkos has decided that from now on, sustainable development will be synonymous with Seduction! Organic food or clothing, recycling, ethical trade will be showcased through fun and glamorous activities. Keep the customer satisfied, make him dream, and he will follow you...”

This led the association to put on a successful ethical fashion show on March 31st with the help of the Ethical Fashion Show Paris and featuring high profile brands such as Article 23, Ethos or Sebola.

Other examples of student green fashion shows and exhibitions are popping up all over the world. Just last week our New York correspondent Abigail Doan was reporting on the Project Earth Day competition. And the past few months have seen students show their catwalk credentials from Atlantic Fashion Week in Halifax, Canada, to Howard University’s Verde show.

STUDENT-3.jpgNext month (on May 12th), Vancouver will have its own Healthy Lifestyle Fashion Show, put on by students, but open to the public.

If young eco designers like Ada Zanditon and Mark Liu are any indication, this awareness of ethical and organic fashion at university level should sprout some very interesting designs indeed.
