A ‘80s signature grunge look gone high fashion, shredding fabrics, from jeans to t-shirts, has been a growing trend this year. And now, designers have even incorporated the shredded statement into fall runway fashion, like Dane Rützou’s unique collection with shredded neck pieces at Copenhagen Fashion Week. And really, whether high fashion or do it yourself, what’s better for the planet than tearing your old garments and giving them new, hip lives?

After seeing actresses and celebrities alike sporting the trend, it has even hit the mass market with designers like Anna Sui featuring affordable, shredded leggings in her latest collection for Target.

In the eco-realm, clothing designer Raquel Allegra is well known for shredded style, as demonstrated in the Spring ’09 LA Fashion Week Show premiere collection. Allegra’s torn clothing has a twist, however, as all of the garments used are former t-shirts from the Los Angeles county jail, reworked into trendy pieces.

obesityandspeed.jpgUnderground label Obesity and Speed goes beyond just tearing fabrics to create an alternative “cut out” look in both its men’s and women’s lines. Dresses, tanks and t-shirts are made from predominately tencel and cotton jersey. Australian designer of Shakuhachi clothing, Jesse White, also creates styles with bright prints and silhouettes with cutout shoulders and hem

With both the Internet and eco-fashion evolving at the speed of light, shredded styling is just a click away from being yours. For instructions on how to recycle your own clothing and engage in some do-it-yourself tearing, check out Fashion Indie, Childhood Flames or Black & White & Chic All Over for step-by-step instructions. So, what are you waiting for? Go tear it up!
