| WHY SEW WHEN YOU CAN KNOT |

Zero waste design has been taken to another level with Mark Liu’s most recent Winter 2010 collection that was premiered at London Fashion Week’s Estethica exhibition in February and will be shown again on April 30th at the Gina Conway Aveda event. Thread is one of those little details that is yet to be addressed in the fashion industry and, understandably, the debate around its environmental credentials is not seen as the biggest priority. However, whilst we wait patiently for it to come into the spotlight, Liu has created a fabulous knotting system that minimises the need to sew and use too much thread. ‘Singularity Point’ is revolutionary, containing some garments that do not even require a sewing machine! Liu, who prefers to see himself as a researcher than designer, uses his developed thinking with gorgeous water-based pigments printed onto organic fabrics that are then cut into clever patterns, ensuring there are virtually no offcuts. And of course, the way Liu’s exceptional mind works, he always finds a way to ensure any scraps of fabric are included in another part of his collection. For all his practicality, he still beautifully blends this into the most luxurious, desirable garments.
